The chess set is inspired in design by the Mayan city of Teotihucuan, and the Pyramid of Kukulcan  Chichen Itza, Mexico.

At the time of the competition, Ry Curtis was ranked 4th in the world on the junior circuit. Fred Flatow was a former senior NSW champion.
