Lightmaterial

Sydney College of the Arts

2000

The Phantom of Lightmaterial suggests an unveiling of the Sydney College of The Arts dark past as a psychiatric hospital. Sydney College of the Arts is haunted. A skull appears on the main tower; it lasts for five minutes then disappears for twenty. Below, amongst the waste bins, seven drums are strapped together, clustered like the barrel of a Gatling gun.

The skull projected onto the towers surface illuminates the sandstone, glass and ironwork.  At a size of around six by nine meters and at approximately thirty meters off the ground, the resting beam of light sends a strong signal out over the city of Sydney.

The drums have been placed in relative obscurity on the College grounds. Spotlighted, faced with the image of the phantom, probably the most mysterious and allusive of all comic characters, the drums resonate power and uncertainty.
