Helmet Heads

Degree Show, Sydney College of the Arts Sydney

1998

In Helmet Heads elements are stripped down to their most basic and raw state. Helmet Heads is two bronze cast American football helmets welded onto two steel bases. They are exhibited end to end with the Helmets at opposing extremities.

This work is the final work from a series that investigated the helmet, conflict, the arena and psychological strategies over an opponent. It is the helmet with its grid-like facing that suggests the psychological strategic element, a unit with potential and force. The helmet is developed for the sole purpose to protect the players head and has the relevant design considerations - a secondary skull, with identification marks pertaining to the team and differing grills corresponding to different field positions.
